The ZigZag house is an Edwardian semi detached house located in the Lakes Conservation Area of Palmers Green. The layout of the house included a long narrow kitchen which had little visual or physical connection to the large rear garden.

The Owners asked us to replace the existing kitchen with an extension to better connect the internal living spaces with the rear garden. As part of the work there are a number of other energy upgrades undertaken to improve the energy efficiency of the house. The measures included additional insulation, replacing the existing heating system with an Air Source Heat Pump, and the installation of solar panels on the rear roof.

The reduce the impact of the extension on the neighbouring properties, the roof takes the form of a ‘zigzag’ to keep the height low along the boundary. Internally, this create a dramatic space which also gives additional roof space for glazing to bring light into the middle room of the house.

Materials used on the extension include zinc cladding, polished concrete floors (both internally and externally), and acid etched copper.
